In case of CEO exit, break glass (or call)

December 2015
Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Whitney Oachs

Mary Christensen & Damian Martin Experienced ResourcesWhen a health care company has an executive role to fill, it can often take months to find a definitive hire. In the meantime, the company needs someone to keep the business running, and that’s where Experienced Resources comes in.

Described as a hybrid between a staffing and consulting firm by Co-founder Damian Martin, the Oakdale based company provides interim leadership for health care companies in Minnesota. From smaller leadership roles to CEOs, the company specializes in recruiting former leaders in the health care industry for jobs lasting from four to six months, on average.

“Health care is constantly changing with mergers, acquisitions and partnerships, and companies want to make sure they are finding the right candidate to handle it all,” Martin said. “The leadership we provide gives them enough time to find the right person.”

Most of the company’s talent comes from people bridging retirement, with 20-plus years of experience in the health care industry, said Co-founder and CEO Mary Christensen. “Many people have left the 60- to 70-hour work week, but still aren’t ready to be done.”

Now in its 10th year of business, Experienced Resources generated $3 million in 2014 revenue, a 25 percent increase from the year before. Christensen says this growth has allowed the company to begin considering expansion beyond Minnesota and western Wisconsin, perhaps to the national level.

Yet John Pettit, a management professor at the University of St. Thomas’ Opus College of Business, says that expanding into unfamiliar territory may prove difficult for the company — his biggest concern being the amount of national competition in this field.

“From a very simple Google search, I was able to identify a large number of executive search firms that provide temporary leadership to health care organizations,” he said. “What sets Experienced Resources apart is its focus on recruiting executives with 20-plus years of experience, but that requires a large pool of older executives who are looking for temporary contract work.”

Right now, Experienced Resources is still regionally focused. With customers such as HealthPartners and Regions Hospital, the company has found its niche in Minnesota, and Christensen thinks this can translate into other Midwestern markets.

“Our next step is to advance further into Wisconsin,” she said.

Expanding would mean overcoming the same struggles the company faced in its early days in Minnesota, like adapting to the local health care market, finding talent and creating brand awareness.

“We can serve any health care setting,” Christensen said. “The customer just has to know our name first.”
