Letter from President & CEO

In speaking with health care leaders from throughout the region, a few consistent themes quickly emerge; patient volumes are down, government sequestration is causing havoc, and uncertainty seems to be looming virtually everywhere.   One health system COO described the current health care transformation that we’re experiencing as “Heading into a tunnel with multiple offshoots.  We don’t know where the paths will lead us, but we’re forging ahead regardless”.  A Clinic Administrator added a comment, “We’re having to change our business model and can no longer limit ourselves to providing core services.  In fact, we’re exploring opportunities for additional business outside the state of Minnesota”.    With those comments in mind, it’s no surprise that this year’s theme for the MHA Annual Trustee Conference  happened to be “Governance for Health Care Transformation” while the MMGMA Summer Conference theme was entitled “The Race is on: Strategies to Get You Across the Finish Line”.  These are all tell-tale signs of what many of you are likely experiencing on a daily basis.  It underscores the need for health care leaders to think creatively and operate flexibly in navigating this new health care world in which we live.

For those of you unable to attend the MHA and MMGA conferences, I’d like to share a few of my key takeaways from those two events: > Read More
