Message from the President & CEO

This past September, I had the opportunity to attend the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) annual meeting, “Leading with Purpose.” The meeting offered health care leaders a chance to reflect on the challenges and successes of the past year. It also took time to look toward the future and begin strategizing and setting priorities for the year ahead. What struck me most about these three days was a resounding uncertainly about the future.  However, this trepidation was offset by the unyielding conviction to patient care expressed by the leaders in attendance.

The outcome of the recent elections alleviated some of the uncertainty. For instance, it is certain that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will continue to be implemented.  However, the implementation of the ACA will bring about changes that are far from certain. Changes that range from accountable-care model implementations to potential mandates for nurse staffing ratios to competition from non-traditional health care entities such as Google and Wal-Mart.
