What Health Care Leaders are Thinking
By Mary Ellen Wells
Vice-President Client Development
Over the past several months, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with many leaders throughout Minnesota’s health care industry. Whether they are part of a large integrated system, an independent group practice, a tweener community hospital, or critical access hospital, these leaders have provided very similar answers when I ask the question, “What’s keeping you busy these days?”
The overwhelming response is:
How can I help my organization understand and change to meet the new demands that are coming?
There is strong agreement that a new care model must be developed. The old ways of reimbursement incentives that favor procedures and tests and result in fragmented care must give way to a new approach that reinforces prevention, wellness, and coordinated care. With or without health care reform, this change must occur if we are to have a sustainable health care system. The demographic changes that we’ve been talking about for years are finally upon us and demanding that paradigm shift.
I would encourage you to take a look at the results of a recent survey by The Commonwealth Fund, Health Care Opinion Leaders’ Views on Delivery System Innovation and Improvement. Gain some comfort in knowing that as a leader during these very trying times you’re not alone, and keep persevering in your efforts to make the necessary changes.
