Interim Operations Leader

Client Challenge

This large metro hospital's ADAP (Alcohol & Drug Abuse Program), with 30 staff members was providing both inpatient and outpatient services to roughly 25-30 patients each day. With a newly ratified union contract in place and a recent leadership departure, they were struggling to meet patient needs and suffering low staff satisfaction. While searching for a permanent replacement, hospital leadership contacted Experienced Resources seeking a strong interim leader to manage the day-to-day operations, improve patient accessibility and quality, ensure compliance to standards for licensure and accreditation, and stabilize the overall department.

Core Values Required

Honesty; Leadership; Quality; Service; and Stewardship

This engagement would require a leader with the right blend of people, operational, and business skills. The first course of action would be to evaluate—and shore up—workflow processes as a step toward creating a more positive patient experience. An overall assessment of the existing ADAP staff and structure was also needed, which would likely be followed by further changes designed to more effectively carry out the program's mission and objectives.

Our Solution

Experienced Resources matched the Client's requirements to a leader with 20+ years' operational experience and the skills to "hit the ground running". In the Post Engagement Review, the Client described our Talent as "the perfect fit". She demonstrated effective leadership, brought much-needed structure to the program, helping recruit talent, and clarified staff expectations. The staff described her style as professional, consistent, fair, and reflecting good judgment. She managed to instill greater accountability within the ADAP while promptly resolving day-to-day issues, which raised staff morale and ultimately improved the patient experience.

Results

Our Talent was able to step in, create a sense of stability, and the ADAP program saw immediate improvement. Changes within the ADAP environment were instantly noticeable and modifications made to the organizational structure began producing very positive volume and productivity gains. The number of clinic walk-ins doubled and nearly tripled, while utilizing the same number of FTEs. According to the Client, "Had we not experienced these improvements, our program would have suffered further decline in volumes—and eventually become non-compliant".
